Keywords: preanalytical phase; coagulation testing; patient selection; sample preparation

Numerous preanalytical variables that affect the coagulation testing have been defined over the years. The three potential main topics where coagulation testing preanalytical issues may arise are specimen collection (including patient selection), specimen transportation and stability, specimen processing and storage. The aim of this review is to identify the preanalytical variables associated with coagulation testing and provide laboratory practice recommendations to improve the quality of coagulation testing and accuracy of the test results.
