Purpose: The importance of medical biochemistry laboratories has increased in the ongoing coronavirus
disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This study aimed to reveal the current situation of medical
biochemistry specialists and medical biochemistry laboratories in 1 year from March 2020 to April 2021.
Material and Methods: The prepared survey was sent to the participants via the internet and their answers were evaluated. Results: Of the 210 medical biochemistry specialists who participated in the survey, 32.4% were male, 67.6% were female, and 62.2% were in the 40-60 age group, and 47.8% were in the 11-20 working years. The highest number of participants was from the Marmara region, with 78.6% working in public and 21.4% private laboratories. 46.4% of specialists were assigned to the pandemic clinics and 42.3% of them were on permanent duty as they were the only specialists. 19.2% of participants had COVID-19 disease and 92.3% were vaccinated. 20.4% of participants supported polymerase chain reaction(PCR) test studies. Conclusion: The active role and management skills of medical biochemistry specialists in the COVID-19 pandemic have been revealed, as medical biochemistry laboratories are the most prepared units for epidemics. As physicians, they supported the teams by working in the pandemic clinics and showed that they could provide when necessary. Although there were problems such as air-cleaning of laboratories, personal protective equipment, material supply, and inequality of coefficients, cooperation with clinics, general information, preparation of guides, sample transfer training were provided by medical biochemistry experts. |
